COLUMBUS — “A Columbus electric utility is buying the largest single-site wind project in American history – and it’s chosen April as the do-or-die month for its future.

The 800-turbine, 2,000 megawatt project being built in Oklahoma by Invenergy and General Electric’s renewable energy division is a massive undertaking that requires the approval of four state regulatory agencies.

American Electric Power Company Inc. has spent a year analyzing the project and its risk, and continues to spend money on its development.

But it needs approval by early 2018, when the board and executives will meet to talk options, AEP CEO Nick Akins said Thursday on a quarterly earnings call with analysts.

… ‘I see this as just an extremely important project,’ Akins said. The wind farm will act as a hedge against fossil-fuel power, he said.”
