COLUMBUS — “President Donald Trump on Tuesday slashed environmental standards while surrounded by executives and workers from coal companies, including Ohio’s Murray Energy Corp.
He signed the executive order to reverse his predecessor’s climate change endeavors: President Obama went too far, Trump says, and he wants to put miners back to work.
Yet to Columbus-based American Electric Power Company Inc., once one of the largest coal-plant operators in the country, coal is already past its prime. When the company recently tried to keep open its Ohio coal plants through customer subsidies, it did so for a reason – the plants weren’t competitive with natural gas plants and other forms of power generation.
Trump appears to be propping up an industry that the U.S. market increasingly isn’t supporting.”
