FirstEnergy to offer discount it says will undercut NOPEC’s rates

FirstEnergy’s downtown Akron headquarters.

AKRON — “A little more than four months after their highly publicized split, Akron-based FirstEnergy Solutions and the Solon-based Northeast Ohio Public Energy Council are in full competition mode.

With a new discount for customers, FirstEnergy may have just fired the initial shot of their first major battle — one being fought over about half-a-million Northeast Ohio customers. It’s bragging that its rates in April will be the cheaper among the two power providers, though the question remains as to which will be cheaper for customers in the long run.

Prior to last November, the two were partners. FirstEnergy gave NOPEC a discount on its power, and NOPEC marketed FirstEnergy’s electricity to consumers through its relationship with local governments in the region. But the relationship ended when the two could not agree on the fee that NOPEC should receive in the deal.

Now FirstEnergy, the region’s biggest electric utility, has announced aggressive pricing that it says will make its rates cheaper than those provided by NOPEC, the nation’s largest governmental retail energy aggregator, beginning in April.”
