Fixing Ohio’s overly strict wind setback law: editorial

CLEVELAND — “Ohio wrongly straitjackets wind energy development — reducing jobs and investment — because of an ill-considered and overly restrictive setback requirement slipped into Ohio law a few years back.

Fortunately, lawmakers have a chance to fix that.

A Republican state legislator from Northwest Ohio, Sen. Cliff Hite of Findlay, has crafted a compromise designed to draw wind energy investment back to Ohio while reasonably safeguarding neighboring property.

…Wind developers support Hite’s plan, which should propel the renewable energy investments in Ohio that attract high-tech firms. Amazon, for instance, already has a wind farm in Paulding County and is building another in Hardin County, about 150 miles southwest of Cleveland.

The wind-setback compromise is fair. Ohio legislators should pass it – soon.”
