Energy / Freeze on Clean Energy

If the Ohio General Assembly doesn’t lift the freeze on renewable energy benchmarks, then Gov. John Kasich should push for reinstating the benchmarks: editorial

plaindealersquareCLEVELAND — “The freeze bill created a 13-member Energy Mandates Study Committee, and required it to report by this Wednesday. The committee is co-chaired by State Rep. Kristina Roegner, of Hudson, and State Sen. Troy Balderson, of Zanesville, both Republicans. And among the panel’s members is State Sen. Sandra Williams, a Cleveland Democrat.

Not only environmentalists lamented SB 310. The Ohio Manufacturers’ Association, representing some of Ohio’s biggest businesses, wanted Kasich to veto it. In counterpoint, among the groups that praised Kasich’s decision to sign the 2014 freeze bill was Americans for Prosperity, a group funded in part by the billionaire Koch brothers, frequent supporters of Republican candidates around the nation.

Kasich’s response to any attempt to extend the freeze on Ohio’s energy benchmarks will speak volumes about to what — and to whom — he’s committed: Ohio’s future, or the seamy, mendacious politics of environmental denial.”
