CLEVELAND — On Tuesday August 16th, Ohio Citizen Action welcomed a group of 11 international leaders from North Africa and the Near East to participate in a U.S. State Department-sponsored program entitled “Promoting Financial Accountability.” Citizen Action Northeast Ohio Program Director Shannon Adams helped lead a discussion about current organizational campaigns focused on clean energy initiatives. In particular, much of the discussion centered around how Citizen Action overcomes the disparity in political and economic influence utility companies have on elected officials and government agencies who are determining energy policy for Ohioans.

Participants included: Ms. Fatma Zohra Dahmani, Algeria; Mr. Lotfi Ramdani, Bahrain; Mr. Nader Ghanem, Egypt; Mr. Hassan Ragab Haridi Mahmoud, Jordan; Mr. Mamdouh Abo Elganam, Jordan; Mr. Ibrahim Al-Balasmeh, Morocco; Ms. Kawtar Benchekroun, Saudi Arabia; Mr. Bandar Al-Ajaji, Tunisia; Mr. Belgacem Youssef, Palestinian Terrorities; Mr. Asad Awashra; and Mr. Shehada Badereddin.

The visitors comprised a wide variety of backgrounds and career fields including international banking inspectors, business and economic media and journalists, legal and financial watchdog groups, and government agencies. The Cleveland Council on World Affairs sponsors the international program through the State Department and has routinely called upon Citizen Action to host international visitors over the years who have come from areas as diverse as Italy, Ukraine, Yemen, Pakistan and Armenia.
