NEWPORT, KY — By all standards the February 12 Music for the Mountains benefit was a tremendous success. Just two hours after the doors opened, 600 people had filled all three performance spaces at Newport’s historic Southgate House, selling out the venue. Crowds stood shoulder to shoulder for popular acts like Shiny and the Spoon and Jake Speed and the Freddies and loudly cheered author Jeff Biggers who predicted, “This is the year we end mountaintop removal coal mining.”

People were lined up all evening to  purchase the companion CD, released that day, which featured most of the 21 acts that performed. A total of $11,701 was raised to be split between Ohio Citizen Action and Kentuckians for the Commonwealth to continue the fight. CDs are still available from both groups and soon will be available in Greater Cincinnati’s independent record stores.

Melissa English, Southern Ohio Campaign Director, Ohio Citizen Action
