Stats: New Yorkers reject fracking 9-to-1

ITHACA, NY — “If you need a way to visualize the tide natural gas drilling must overcome in New York State, check out the updated FrackTracker.org map illustrating towns that have either passed bans or moratoriums, or are considering them. According to the map’s maintainer, there is a 9-to-1 majority for barring fracking in New York State, at least for now.

‘The population living in towns with current bans or moratoria is about 1.6 million people,’ Karen Edelstein writes. By comparison, just around 178,000 people live in New York towns that have passed pro-fracking resolutions.  Edelstein used 2010 U.S. Census figures.

The yellow on the Broome County portion of the map, denoting potential moratoriums against hydrofracking could get even greater if a proposed moratorium is approved later this year. Earlier this week, the Chenango Town Board of Supervisors announced the proposal, setting a 7pm, Oct. 1 public hearing.
