The State of the Union and the mercury rule

President Barack Obama delivers the 2012 State of the Union speech last night, as Vice President Joseph Biden and House Speaker John Boehner listen.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — In last night’s State of the Union address, President Barack Obama did not say the word “coal,” but he did say “mercury.”

“I will not back down from protecting our kids from mercury poisoning . . .”

This sentence referred to the “mercury rule” issued by the U.S. EPA on December 21, 2011, which cracked down on mercury emissions from outdated coal plants.
